If you've ever finished a track, uploaded it, and found it sounds quieter or flatter than everything around it on Spotify, a loudness meter is the tool you were missing.

Your DAW's normal meters show you peak level. That tells you whether you're clipping. It tells you almost nothing about how loud your track will actually sound to a listener.

Here are the five worth using in 2026, and what the numbers on them mean.

What the Numbers Actually Mean

Three readings matter, and everything else on these plugins is detail.

LUFS (integrated) — the average perceived loudness of the whole track. This is the number streaming platforms use.

True peak — the real maximum level after your file is converted to MP3 or AAC. It can be higher than the peak your DAW shows, which is how a track that looked fine ends up distorting on Spotify.

LRA (loudness range) — how much the loudness varies across the track. A very low number usually means you've squashed it flat.

It uses 16x oversampling on true peak, so it catches inter-sample clipping that simpler meters miss.

Weakest at: depth. The simplicity that makes it good for learning is limiting once you know what you're doing.

Best for: anyone who wants one window with everything in it.

Insight is the professional all-rounder: integrated, short-term and momentary LUFS, loudness range, true peak, RMS, plus spectrum and stereo analysis. It has presets for a long list of delivery destinations, which is handy if you're doing anything beyond music.

Weakest at: price and overkill. If you only ever release music to streaming, you're paying for a lot you won't open.

Most meters give you loudness on one side and dynamics on the other and leave you to work out the relationship. true:level shows both at once, so you can see whether you've bought loudness by flattening the track.

You can load up to eight reference tracks to compare against, and its Level Check gives written suggestions rather than just numbers. It's £59 with a 30-day trial and no free version.

Weakest at: being another opinion. If you already trust your ears, the suggestions can be noise.

5. Waves WLM Plus

Best for: people already inside the Waves ecosystem.

A long-standing standard that unusually includes a true peak limiter alongside the metering, so you can measure and correct in one place.

Worth knowing: it now mostly turns up inside Waves' subscription bundles. If you're not already a Waves user, one of the four above is a simpler purchase.

What Should You Actually Master To?

Spotify normalises playback to -14 LUFS integrated and recommends mastering to that figure, with true peak below -1 dBTP — or below -2 dBTP if your master is louder than -14 LUFS, because transcoding can push peaks up.

Premium listeners can change that: Loud is -11 LUFS, Normal is -14, Quiet is -19.
