Free Soundtoys Alternatives: The Whole Bundle Covered (2026)
Free alternatives to the Soundtoys bundle, plugin by plugin. What gets close to EchoBoy, Little AlterBoy, Crystallizer and the rest, and what doesn't.
This post contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, FSA gets a small commission at no extra cost to you.
The Soundtoys 5 bundle is one of the few plugin collections where nearly everything in it gets used. It isn’t cheap at full price, so check the current price on Plugin Boutique before you decide.
We’ve already covered the most famous one on its own — see our Decapitator review and the free plugins that get closest to it. This post takes on the rest of the bundle.
Instead of EchoBoy: Valhalla Freq Echo and TAL-Dub
EchoBoy is the crown jewel for a lot of people — tape echo, analogue delay, weird modulated repeats, all with real character.
Valhalla Freq Echo is free and does frequency-shifted echo that gets genuinely strange in a good way. TAL-Dub is free and nails the classic dub delay with filtered, degrading repeats.
Good for: character delays, dub throws, anything that shouldn’t sound clean
Falls short: neither has EchoBoy’s range. You’re picking two specific flavours rather than getting a whole box of them
Instead of Little AlterBoy: Graillon 2
Little AlterBoy does pitch and formant shifting on vocals — the robot, the octave-down, the gender shift.
Graillon 2 is free and covers most of it, including formant control and hard pitch snapping.
Good for: vocal effects, doubling, robot voices
Falls short: less refined on subtle settings, and the throat control behaves differently
Instead of Crystallizer: PaulXStretch and Freq Echo
Crystallizer is granular echo — shimmering, reversed, pitched-up trails.
Nothing free copies it exactly. PaulXStretch is free and does extreme time-stretching for huge ambient textures, and Freq Echo covers the pitched-trail side.
Good for: ambient beds and transitions
Falls short: these are offline or effect-specific tools. Crystallizer’s immediacy isn’t really replicated
Instead of MicroShift: TAL-Chorus-LX
MicroShift is the widening trick on countless vocals — tiny pitch and delay offsets that push a sound outwards without obvious chorus.
TAL-Chorus-LX is free and gets you a similar widening effect, though by slightly different means.
Good for: widening vocals and synths
Falls short: more audible movement than MicroShift, which is prized for being nearly invisible
Instead of Devil-Loc and Radiator: Analog Obsession
The saturation and crush side of the bundle. Analog Obsession give away a large collection of free analogue emulations covering console, tape and compression colour.
Good for: grit, glue, drum smashing
Falls short: documentation is thin, and you’ll experiment rather than read
What the Bundle Actually Gives You
Consistency. Every Soundtoys plugin shares a look, a workflow and a Tweak button that opens the deeper controls. Learning one teaches you the others.
Character with control. Free effects often force a choice between clean and broken. Soundtoys plugins are good at sitting in the middle.
Sale pricing. Worth knowing: the bundle discounts heavily and often. Paying list price is rarely necessary.
Real-World Use in Lessons
Effects are where clients at Future Sound Academy most often mistake owning something for knowing how to use it.
Most of the interesting sounds in electronic music come from routing rather than plugins — a delay on a send with a filter after it, a saturator before a reverb rather than after, an effect automated on for one bar. You can do every one of those with the free plugins above.
In sessions we spend far more time on where an effect sits in the chain than on which effect it is. The clients whose tracks jump forward are the ones who learn three effects properly rather than owning thirty.
Final Takeaway
Install Valhalla Freq Echo, TAL-Dub, Graillon 2 and Analog Obsession, and you’ve covered most of the bundle’s ground for nothing.
Buy Soundtoys in a sale when you want consistency and speed rather than because free effects sound worse — they don’t. If your tracks feel flat despite the plugin folder, the answer is usually routing, and that’s what our sessions dig into.
