Free Valhalla Reverb Alternatives (And the Free Valhalla)
Free alternatives to Valhalla VintageVerb, including the excellent reverb Valhalla give away free. What each one does best and where it falls short.
Valhalla VintageVerb is one of those plugins that turns up on nearly every "what's on your master bus" list, and at around £50 it's already one of the better value plugins in music.
Still, £50 is £50. And there's something a lot of people searching for a free alternative don't realise.
Valhalla Already Give One Away
Valhalla Supermassive is completely free. No trial, no crippled version, no email required.
It's from the same developer, and it's superb — enormous delays and reverbs, from tight slapbacks to washes that go on for half a minute.
Good for: ambient tails, huge washes, dub delays, anything you want to sound cinematic
Falls short: it isn't a realistic room. Supermassive makes beautiful unreal spaces, not believable ones
If you want VintageVerb because you like big lush reverb, Supermassive may genuinely be all you need. Valhalla Freq Echo is also free and excellent for frequency-shifted delay effects.
OrilRiver
Free, and the best free algorithmic reverb for natural spaces.
Rooms, halls, plates, with proper control over early reflections — the part that actually makes a space sound real.
Good for: believable rooms and halls, drums, vocals that need to sound like they're somewhere
Falls short: the interface is dated, and it can eat CPU on longer settings
Supermassive and OrilRiver together cover most of what people buy reverb for.

Free, simple, and does a convincing plate.
Good for: vocals and snares. Set it and forget it
Falls short: limited control. What you hear is roughly what you get
Dragonfly Reverb
Free and open source, with separate versions for rooms, halls and plates.
Good for: having a specific tool for a specific space

So What Does VintageVerb Give You?
Being fair to it.
Character. VintageVerb models the specific sound of older digital reverbs, including their limitations. That grain is the point, and free plugins tend to sound cleaner and more generic.
Speed. Well-chosen modes and presets mean you find the sound in seconds.
Low CPU. Valhalla plugins are famously light, which matters when you've got eight reverbs in a session.
Colour modes that change the era it's imitating, which is a fast way to make something sit in a particular decade.
None of that is essential. All of it is pleasant, and at £50 it's an easy purchase once you're earning anything from music.
The Mistake Most People Make With Reverb
More relevant than any plugin choice.
The usual problem isn't a cheap reverb, it's too much of it, applied to everything, with no high-pass filter on the return. That's what makes a mix sound washy and distant, and it happens with expensive plugins just as easily.

Real-World Use in Lessons
Reverb is one of the most common things we fix in production sessions at Future Sound Academy, and the fix is almost never a different plugin.
It's usually sending less, filtering the low end out of the return, and shortening the tail so the track keeps its groove. Clients are often surprised how much clearer a mix gets when the reverb comes down rather than up.
We happily work with Supermassive and OrilRiver in sessions. Neither has ever been the reason a track didn't sound good.

Buy VintageVerb when you want its specific vintage character and the speed of getting there. It's cheap enough that it's an easy yes later. If your mixes sound washy, the plugin isn't the problem, and a session will show you why in about ten minutes.
